sony ericsson Launches new Xperia X8 | 3 inch screen device

Today saw Sony Ericsson out some new devices – the X8, Cedar and the Yendo. These along with some to be released devices like the Aspen and Zylo and Spiro has us excited. These devices clearly seems to be essaying Sony Ericsson’s return to where it belongs. Some of these devices seem a bit dated, but what the overall product line does show is that Sony Ericsson is serious and committed to remain in the game.
The X8 is an Android device with a 3 inch screen device, designed to fill the gap between X10 and X10mini.

Here’s what Sony Ericsson has to say about the device in it’s press release -
The Sony Ericsson Xperia™ X8 is a great entertainment smartphone that extends the appeal of the Xperia™ collection to new market segments. The user interface is similar to that of the Xperia™ X10 mini, with the four-corners that give easy one hand use and can be customised for one touch access to your favourite applications. The Xperia™ X8 also includes Timescape™ for easy access to all your social networking and the infinite button for one click access to a world of content. The open Android operating system delivers great smartphone functionality and access to thousands of applications on Android Market

While the Yendo in Sony’s first Andriod based Walkman phone. with a 2.6″ touchscreen using the four corner touch UI. The Yendo is equipped with a 2MP camera, making this the new mid level Walkman in my opinion. Since there will be colour jackets available for this phone, one will be able to personalize it according to his/her taste. Though the colours might not be such a significant thing, it does represent Sony’s attempt to become mainstream again. And this, in my opinion, is good for the market and the industry.
Cedar on the other hand is a 3G device from SE. Look carefully and you might see the resemblence of the Cedar with the Nokia E50. An affordable 3G phone with access to all the social networking sites (we mean Facebook, Twitter and Myspace amongst more), it also has EAS push mail, a 2MP camera and a curved back for better hand ergonomics. This phone also belongs to the GreenHeart series, meaning it will be a green phone in the pocket. We think that these devices represent a new outlook Sony Ericsson has towards the market and itself. These devices do seem like they will sell in good numbers, but we do fear Sony pricing it away from the sweet points. Given how Sony Ericsson has been doing of lately, we fear that pricing these devices at the north side of the scale could adversely affect Sony’s chances to remain in the game.

But why are we excited, you must be thinking. Well because this attempt by Sony Ericsson seems like it’s first real attempt at returning to the mainstream market. By providing touchscreen devices with Andriod, colour options, et al – Sony Ericsson looks like it may just have got its rhythm back.
The lines have been drawn and now with everybody having taken sides on OS and technology– it is now up to the customer to choose what he/she likes. Looks like the customer will once again be king and a powerful one at that.
